The realities
Years of training come first, and income is often irregular and project-based, especially early on. Many musicians combine performing with teaching, session work or production, and online platforms let them reach listeners directly.
The usual route in India
Long training with a teacher is the core of the craft. A BA (Hons) in Music adds theory and performance: the University of Delhi, for example, combines CUET-UG scores with an audition and asks for at least three years of prior music training. Production is usually learnt through specialised courses and studio work.

Other ways in
Many professional musicians learn privately and build an audience and a portfolio of recordings without a music degree.
