What the work looks like

  • Leading and training a team, and being responsible for their welfare
  • Planning operations, exercises and logistics
  • Keeping fit and learning continually through service courses

The realities

Demanding physical and medical standards, postings anywhere including remote border areas and at sea, and long spells away from family. In return: early leadership responsibility and a structured career of service.

The usual route in India

After Class 12: the UPSC NDA exam and an SSB interview, then three years at the National Defence Academy and further training at a service academy (Army cadets go to the Indian Military Academy). After graduation: the CDS exam (or AFCAT for the Air Force) and the SSB.

Other ways in

The Navy and Air Force wings of NDA need Physics and Mathematics in Class 12; the Army wing accepts any stream. Technical entries exist for engineering students and graduates.

We show India pay only where there's an official public figure, such as government pay scales. This career doesn't have one yet.

  • India's official survey data (PLFS) can be used commercially only under a licence, and salary websites don't allow reuse. Rather than show a guess, we leave India pay out until there's a figure we're allowed to use.

  • Navy and Air Force cadets go to the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy instead, and the length differs.
  • NDA courses start twice a year; the joining month depends on which exam you clear. Check the current UPSC notice.
  • These academy lengths are standard figures we could not re-check on the official sites this time.

A plan, not a promise: a repeated year, a break or a change of course moves these dates.

How we work this out: sources, assumptions and limits

Why “no reliable pay data yet”

  • India's official survey data (PLFS) can be used commercially only under a licence, and salary websites don't allow reuse. Rather than show a guess, we leave India pay out until there's a figure we're allowed to use.

Timeline assumptions

  • Today is in the 2026–27 school year (April to March).
  • One class per year, with no repeated year.
  • Class 12 results arrive around May; college intakes start on the months shown.
  • Admission in the first year you apply.
  • Courses take their standard length; a failed year or a break adds time.
  • The first job starts about a month after the last stage ends.
