The realities
Months at sea at a stretch, then time at home; physically demanding, with strict medical and eyesight standards. Promotion depends on sea time and on passing certificate of competency exams conducted by India's maritime administration (DG Shipping).
The usual route in India
After Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics: a one-year Diploma in Nautical Science and 18 months of cadet sea time, or a three-year B.Sc Nautical Science and 12 months of sea time, before the Second Mate exam. Engineer officers usually take a four-year B.Tech in Marine Engineering.
Entrance exams and tests
- IMU CET
- Shipping-company sponsorship tests (for the nautical diploma)
Other ways in
A six-month General Purpose Rating course after Class 10 or 12 is a separate, longer route that starts as ship's crew.

Quick answers
- How long does it take to become a merchant navy officer in India?
- On the usual route (Diploma in Nautical Science + cadet sea time), about 3 years after Class 12. A student in Class 12 in 2026–27 could start working around 2030; a student in Class 8 around 2034. A preparation year, a master's or a repeated year moves this later.
- How much does a merchant navy officer earn?
- Edukrish doesn't publish an India salary figure for this career yet, because reliable occupation-level data that can be reused doesn't exist publicly. In the United States, median pay for captains, mates, and pilots of water vessels was $92,460 a year in 2025; the lowest-paid 10% earned under $47,420 and the top 10% over $170,640 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
- Will AI take over the work of a merchant navy officer?
- The ILO's 2025 index of generative-AI exposure says this occupation group ("Ships' deck officers and pilots") is in the low-exposure group: of its 8 typical tasks, 1 is moderately exposed and 7 have low exposure; none is highly exposed. Exposure measures what the technology could do today, not job losses; it usually changes which tasks people spend time on.

No reliable pay data for India yet
- India's official survey data (PLFS) can be used commercially only under a licence, and salary websites don't allow reuse. Rather than show a guess, we leave India pay out until there's a figure we're allowed to use.
Your path from today
One year of pre-sea training, 18 months at sea as a deck cadet, then the Second Mate certificate of competency.

There's no reliable job-postings data for India yet, so these signals come from the US.
Exposure to generative AI (ILO, 2025)
Low exposure: most tasks rely on things current generative AI can't do.
- Very low
- Low
- Medium
- High
How many of the 8 typical tasks of “ships' deck officers and pilots” current generative AI could technically do. Exposure is not the same as job loss: it often changes which tasks people spend their time on. By 2032 the tools will be different again, so treat this as direction, not a forecast.
